‘I believe in the power of interiors to enhance and lift moods’, says Hannah Cecil Gurney. Hannah comes from wallpaper aristocracy, her father founded de Gournay in the 1980s, providing a renaissance in sumptuous chinoiserie and furnishings, hand-painted on paper, porcelain or silk damask. Chinoiserie is a combination of oriental styles, creating an exotic fantasy world which, in the 17th and 18th centuries, was extremely popular in grand European houses, as owners boasted of their sophistication and wealth with at least one room dedicated entirely to the artform.
